VANCOUVER - Vancouver police are taking a harder line with tent city protests, to prevent a repeat of last year's running squats.
City ends False Creek squat
Officers and city crews dismantled 20 temporary plywood shelters on Thursday night, set up just hours earlier in a city park in Chinatown.
Anti-poverty activists had hoped to get permission to create a tent city in the park for the homeless.
Instead, dozens of police officers moved in quickly, as city crews dismantled the shelters.
"We decided to take a proactive stance this time around, and remove the squats before people actually became firmly entrenched in those locations," says Const. Anne Drennan.

Two people were arrested after a scuffle with police.
Drennan says charges of inciting a riot may be recommended against one of them.
Activists say they'll now lobby city council to allow a well-organized tent city somewhere in Vancouver, to save people from sleeping on the streets. |
