Vancouver Police use old lessons to deal with would-be squat

April 1st, 8:18pm

VANCOUVER(CKNW/AM980) -- Vancouver Police say they're going to be vigilant when it comes to tent cities.

A group of anti-government protesters tried to set one up Thursday on some green space in Chinatown.

However, police and city staff quickly swooped in and took the squat down.

Constable Anne Drennan says ever since last year's squats, they've learned that stopping them before they start is the best course of action.

Anti-government protesters heckled police as the would-be tent city was taken down, which led to a brief standoff.

Two men were arrested, but the situation ended peacefully.

Downtown Eastside advocate on Vancouver Council supports VPD anti-squat initatives

VANCOUVER(CKNW/AM980) -- Vancouver City Councilor Jim Green says the police policy to try to quickly take down squats is the right one.

Green says the right to protest is one thing, but he does not want to see a repeat of last year's numerous tent cities.

He says during last year's squats, Methamphetamine dealers were living in the tent cities.

Green says there was also a lot of violence, which he says no one wants to see.

Green says he can't understand why anti-poverty activists are always setting up on City property to protest the B-C government.

He says the city is doing all it can around issues like homelessness and employment.

Vancouver Police and city officials quickly took down a would-be tent city on some green space in Chinatown Thursday.

There were a couple of arrests as protesters squared off with police while the structures were being taken down.
