Group jumps on wrong bandwagon

The Council of Canadians has often taken the left-wing stance on issues. Save the CBC. Save our water. Down with the Free Trade Agreement.

All of that has been expected and predictable.

But now the council is taking on Sun Peaks Resort and the protest a small number of natives have been continuing over the past several years.

This weekend, the council is joining natives who have demonstrated in the past, along with the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs.

A spokeswoman with the council said earlier this week her organization is jumping on the bandwagon because of water issues. The council has been concerned about water exports, along with deterioration of watersheds and other water-quality issues, said Tara Scurr.

That fits in with the council's left-leaning causes. So does aboriginal rights, which is the basis of the Sun Peaks protest.

Apparently, as Sun Peaks grows, so does demand on water. And deterioration of the watershed. And the possibility of a water-filtration system, which Scurr suggested might be looked at by private interests.

But what the council doesn't seem to realize is that it's been a small group of natives who have objected to Sun Peaks Resort's expansion plans. That there are other bands working in harmony with the resort.

When this was pointed out to Scurr, her response was that of course not all bands agree on issues and that some are willing to sell out for a Wal-Mart.

Well, there are no Wal-Marts on any of the reserves around here.

And the Council of Canadians is supporting a group that many other area bands consider to be taking the wrong route in trying to get their point
across.

Sometimes political correctness can go too far. The Council of Canadians has been quick to judge natives who aren't protesting, in this case, and not thorough enough in doing its research into the background of the Sun Peaks dispute.
