FESTIVAL MAINSTAGE (continued)
|
Loud
|
The music of Loud is not easy to define. Reviewers have
tried various labels: post-rock, avant garde and taiko
grunge. Their music has been described as "gripping",
"mesmerising" and the band's favourite "having all the
intentional heat of an arsonists fire". The three women
of Loud, Eileen Kage, Leslie Komori and Elaine Stef,
began playing and writing music together in 1996 and have
since performed at numerous events in Vancouver including
Prison Justice Day, Powell Street Festival, Rock For
Choice and Under The Volcano's Festival of Art &
Social Change. They combine electric guitar,
taiko drums, flute and accordion in a way never done
before.
Their critically acclaimed debut cd, "taikoelectric"
was released in March 2000 is drawing accolades for
its raw power and originality.

Nanao Sakaki
|
Born in a small village near Kagoshima, at the southern tip
of Japan's Kyushu Island, Nanao ("Seventh Son") Sakaki has
lived a remarkable life. He was drafted into the navy during
WWII and observed farewell parties for young Kamikaze
pilots leaving at dawn for their deaths. After he was
spared a military mass suicide order when Japan surrendered,
he became a wandering scholar and poet, walking the length
and breadth of Japan. An early leader of Japan's
counterculture, he befriended American poets Allen Ginsberg
and Gary Snyder in 1964, an association which continued for
decades. His work has been described as bringing the
classical zen tradition of Basho and Ryokan into the 20th
century.
"What we think of in the classical poets as elegant paeans
to nature become, in his hands, pleas for the preservation
of the planet against the double threat of pollution and
nucleur destruction"
Recent publications include Let's Eat Stars, Break
the Mirror, and a biography, Nanao or Never
(Blackberry Books).
