Rafiq Butt, a 42-year-old Pakistani restaurant worker, was taken into custody by the FBI after the September 11 attacks. He was being detained as a material witness and had not been charged with a crime. On October 23, Rafiq Butt was found dead in his New Jersey cell. The medical examiner declared he died of heart failure.
But the autopsy report revealed marks on Rafiq Butt's body suggesting he had been subjected to severe torture before his death. The report found multiple fractures in his cousin's legs and chest, as well as deep bruises on the body, Mr. Butt's cousin reported.
Until county officals announced that Butt had been found dead in his jail cell, neither the Pakistani consulate, Butt's family, nor members of the local Pakistani community knew of his incarceration. Authorities admit Butt had no connection to the September 11 attacks.
