Burning Vision
April 23rd - May 11th
Matinees: May 4th and 11th, 2:00 PM
Firehall Arts Centre (Vancouver)
Tickets: (604) 689-0926
Rumble Productions, in association with Urban Ink Productions, presents "Burning Vision", by Marie
Clements. "Burning Vision" explores the journey of the uranium rock from its origins in the earth,
through water, over the land and into fire: the bomb that landed on Hiroshima. In the late 1800's, a
Dene Medicine man sang four songs during his vision of a burning from the sky. The vision indeed came
true, but it was on the Japanese and not the Dene. "Burning Vision" is unique in that it examines and
gives voice to the identity and concerns of white and non-white cultures not as solely distinct and
separate communities, but rather as interwoven and linked with each other through seemingly disparate
events, experiences and historical forces. The project highlights the potential community role of
theatre and the performing arts.
Independent Writer's Forum/Zine Centric Literary Event
Monday, April 29 - 7pm @ SFU Harbour Centre, BC Gas Cinema (Rm 1800)
Tuesday, April 30- 7pm @ The Sugar Refinery
Each event is $3 refundable off the purchase of literature
Two evenings with self-publishing authors Amber Gayle, Abram Himelstein, Trish Kelly, and Andy
Healey.
Currently hailing from southern Oregon, Amber Gayle has been involved in the independent book world
for most of the last decade. In the past eight years, she and her identical twin sister, designer
Stacey Wakefield have published a variety of both limited edition and larger book runs under the Evil
Twin Publications moniker. The high caliber of literary content and design has earned some of their
titles inclusion in a number of book art shows and prestigious placings in permanent collections of
institutions such as MOMA NY and the Victoria Albert in London. Along with her own publications,
Amber will also be travelling with a collection of about two dozen limited edition books by a variety
of member artists of the Brooklyn Artist Bookmakers Alliance of Brooklyn, NY.
Abram Himelstein is a co-founder of New Mouth from the Dirty South Press in New Orleans, and
co-author of the experimental novel, Tales of a Punk Rock Nothing. His current project is a zine and
zine subscription service called Factory Direct. This project produced 4-5 times each year includes
limited edition, hand-made envelopes each containing three zines. The first series of envelopes,
"300 love letters", designed by New Orleans artist, Asia was recently discussed in the New York Times
Valentines section.
The Independent Writers Forum at SFU Harbour Center will feature readings by Amber and Abram.
Joining them will be well-known local author/publisher, Trish Kelly. This forum will include
discussions on the artistic processes of book design and creating literature, and practical and
business aspects of the independent press. The evening will close with a question and answer period.
The Zine Centric Literary Event at the Sugar Refinery will again feature readings from these two
writers. This night they are joined by Vancouver author/musician, Andy Healey, the genius behind the
I'm Johnny and I Don't Give a Fuck series of zine/novels. Following the reading will be the weekly
Parallela Tuesday night of improvisational music.

Don't miss this special presentation of Or Et Juste's "Eclats De Ga Vroche". Created in Paris and
now premiering in Vancouver, this multidisciplinary creation speaks a multitude of languages: visual
(Super 8 projection), corporeal (dance), musical and vocal. The work is both intimate and expansive,
seamlessly incorporating all mediums: Super 8 film is projected on the body, on an accordion, and a
loosely hanging sheet - bringing the moving image to other dimensions; dance is used as a medium of
emotion's concrete expression and an exploration of space and time. Spoken word and musical
interludes draw us into the theatrical as well as the political. "Eclats De Ga Vroche" presents
misery as a reality instead of a fatality, denouncing a system that excavates the moat between the
miserable and...the others....Inspired by one of Victor Hugo's characters, Gavroche is a child of
"Les Miserables", a child of the street, but he is free - both provoking and mischievous.

A hip hop opera by C.R. Avery. "A fart in the wind, after eatin' strawberries and white wine. Written
on a train, movin' slow, but movin' just the same. Inspired by a girl in Seattle (well her stories
anyway). It kicked around in my brain until manifest action took shape, like God and a wishing well,
like time and a rhyme machine. It's about the age old question, it's about age and the connection to
death and the love of loneliness. The wind whistles and I know I am home. A quiet room, till the
violence of voice, soul with the key from a stubborn sacrifice of mercy. Soul mates, Fates, bullets,
plates and hub caps rollin' through eternity, someone raps and all turn to see...a shot gun wedding."
