I get some pretty funny hate mail. I have decided to start publishing some of it here for entertainment value. Also, I do not run spell check and correct hate mail I receive. These letters are published just as I receive them...I have a backlog of hate mail as well as fan mail to upload, it is hard to find the time to do everything...

This one is both fan and hate mail in one! It is referring to the following picture of drying comfrey, and the sticker on the wall.

Well, Kirsten, I do empathize with you; but I'm a maintenance man at a welfare housing complex (158 units) -- and I see something rather different. Three of these units are male head of household, all cripples unable to work. 153 are female head of household, all have virtually total welfare, 79 of 153 have plasma-screen TVs, 9 go to FL for the winter, and no less than 64% have children or grandchildren in the prison. And the chill in it I wear: a gold and ruby ring I found in the dumpster picking up after them one morning.

Sorry, but my empathy for you does not extend to the average welfare mom who expects me to unplug her toilet because she dumped too much in it -- or expects me to install a new stove because she's too busy watching TV to clean her old one -- which I'll have to clean and bring to somebody else who's too lazy to clean her stove.

Dear Ms. Anderberg; I read your submission on The New Orleans relief effort. Ive been working most of my life on disaster relief both in the United States and in the middle east, Africa and Asia including recent Tsunami relief. I posted a comment on the San diego indymedia website. It is unfortunate that they chose to delete it. I wrote about my earlier experiences driving trucks of relief supplies after a hurricane. One thing I have noticed. Wether my truck of food bottled water and plastic sheet gets there while the eye of the storm is passing over or if I get there long after the dead are buried. One thing will be the same. Someone, (usually me) will be blamed for getting there too late. Hurricanes, earthquakes and Tsunamis are faceless and arbitrary. They can level a concrete building and leave a shack next to it untouched. Its not very satisfying to blame the destruction of your life and home on a shifting continent or a warm air mass. It is much easier to blame the dirty smelly volunteer truck driver or the agency that sent him.

By the Way I am currently a field director for the salvation army and I am working in Florida. Today we delivered 6,000 pounds of donated clothing tooth brushes chairs OTC medicines a few hundred bibles pet food diapers and 10 air conditioners removed from someones house and donated to someone they will never meet. January 11, 2005: "Hello Kirsten Anderberg, I read your article and I disagree wholeheartedly. Leftist groups usually have that faction of rebel rousers that throw bottles at cops, creates property damage, attacks people that disaggree with them and uses such violence to provoke cops into "rash" action. That way violent leftists can trump up charges against honest cops. That is part of the Leftist Communist agenda to demonize cops (and other american institutions); that becomes obvious to me the more I research the Left and its morally reprehensible conduct.

Those particular types of leftists are not exercising "Free Speech". The second amendment does not say "do violence to property or persons", nor does the second amendment say "use violence or the threat of violence to provoke cops and frame them." The second amendment says you have the right to "...peacefully assemble to petition the government for a redress of grievances." The key word here is "peacefully" and "petition" (i.e drawing government's attention to legitimate issues or complaints).

The cops are not there to silence first amendment rights, they are there to stop violence when some "protestors" go too far and break the law (then hide behind the second amendment like the hypocrites they are). I am not a cop and I am politically independent. I see your site and article is marred by your own propaganda, propaganda that collapses under the weight of Reason and critical thinking.

PS: Cops don't use "high powered weaponery on unarmed American people". Instead cops use weaponery that disables, not kills, militants who confuse violence with "free speech". Responsible writers should emphasize this. February 10, 2005: "Some of your articles are right on with reality. But there are some, particularly this article, that reflect immaturity, laziness and unsophistication. This article tries to show the landlord and property owner as selfish and evil, and use the comparison of the Bush Administration's run of the government and disregard for human life, as in the illegal invasion of Iraq. Granted, Bush and Company are evil and the Iraq War is illegal and wrong. However, there is no comparison here to landlords or property owners.

Yes, we have slumlords in this country. They are sleazy, vile scum who rip off the hard working poor. But they are in the minority. For the most part, landlords maintain their properties, keep the water pipes clear, keeping their facilities maintained and repaired.

When we sign a lease, just as when we agree to a job, we agree to either PAY the monthly rent in return for the use of the property, or we agree to WORK AS REQUIRED for the pay we are given. If we decide for whatever reason we cannot or will not pay the rent, the landlord has the right -- yes, legal right -- to evict us. If we decide we cannot or will not perform our duties on the job as required, the employer has the right to fire us.

As far as feeling sorry for the renter who works year after year paying rent with no end in sight to home ownership, I ask you why so many foreigners come to this country with hardly any money, sacrifice for years to save the down payment on a home, and are able to one day be a property owner?... most of us have a choice -- especially in this U.S. -- as to what we do with our time and responsibilities. Those who waste time and are irresponsible, usually have nothing to show for their lives. Those who make the most of their time and live responsibly, usually are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. The former group has no right to complain, but this is where you usually find the most complaints toward the latter group. This is due to envy and laziness.

Regardless of how a person acquires their home or rental property, it is theirs to do as they legally please. Most people have earned their properties the hard way - just like I did. For those who didn't, it's not our business anyway what they do with it. If we are in a contractual agreement with a slumlord, we have every right to take them to court to keep up their end of the bargain. But we have no right to classify property owners as a whole group as selfish and trifling. This article itself is selfish, trifling and ignorant!

And don't forget: Every time you see a home or property building that is beautiful and well-maintained...someone put in the time, money and work to keep it that way. On a daily basis, I keep my home clean, make repairs, make upgrades, tend my garden and am able to enjoy my home. I just added concrete and brick to my patio. $4000 for that one addition alone! It is a great effort to maintain a property and those who value what it takes can understand the this.

Only a person who has limited understanding or experience in the real world would fail to understand these legal contracts and the rights, privileges and responsibilities of owners and employers.
